DEPARTMENT OF ORAL PATHOLOGY & MICROBIOLOGY

Pathology literally is the "study (Logos) of suffering (Pathos)" which is the core academic requirement of/for any medical professional.

Oral Pathology is a specialized branch of dentistry that deals with microscopic investigations of pathological conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region.

Oral pathology is specialized to evaluate the prognosis of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region.

It is the foundation subject on which the science of dentistry stands and it is the only branch of dentistry representing the confluence of basic sciences and clinical dentistry covering the subjects of hematology, biochemistry, immunology, serology, microbiology, oncology, histopathology, cytopathology and forensic odontology. The Department of Oral Pathology of ADCH is primarily involved in training the undergraduate and postgraduate students in the subjects of Oral Anatomy, Histology, Biology, Physiology and Pathology.

The Department was established in 2007 with the aim of Undergraduates teaching and more importantly the diagnosis of specimens received from various departments and also from various other sources.

The Post graduate course in this speciality has commenced from 2014 and from then the number of seats has ever significantly enhanced from 2 to 5, exemplifying superior academic infrastructure (faculties and facilities).

This department is well equipped with an audiovisual seminar room, a dedicated pathological laboratory, a dedicated microscopy area with great range of microscopes including a pentahead microscope, a research microscope and a stereo microscope and 9 dental chairs for the requisite clinicopathological examination / evaluation of patients and also for methodical training of students. The department is well staffed with Professors, Readers, Senior Lecturers and other staffs as per N.D.C norms.

Department of Pathology has a strong well established research protocol with its own Departmental Research Committee (University approved) with PG dissertations duly drafted and approved till date.

Students are continually encouraged to participate in scientific programmes and activities on a national level with promising outcomes (IDA national conference Kolkata, International Saliva symposium, Bangalore). This department is also in possession of an enviable Museum with a variety of specimens including foetuses, dental hard and soft tissue resected specimens and various models for the stimulation of young minds.

The Oral Pathologist attempts to understand oral diseases so that they can be meticulously diagnosed and properly treated / sufficiently managed.
